| Gillian grew up in Arlington, Virginia and attended Pomona College. She graduated with a degree in history in 2003. In 2004, Gillian ventured to the Marshall Islands as a WorldTeach volunteer teacher (in the same group as Tamara). She lived on Jaluit, Jaluit where she taught grades 3 - 8. While on Jaluit, she initiated parent-teacher conferences, a first for the island. Gillian's fondest memories of her time as a volunteer include Christmas caroling with her students (especially "Silent Night" with 75 lit candles), taking bucket showers under the stars, island hopping at low tide, learning to play the ukulele and singing Marshallese songs. After her time as a volunteer, Gillian moved to Majuro for a short time and worked as a language instructor for a program offered through the Ministry of Education. While spending the summer in Majuro, Gillian performed Marshallese songs with her fellow Jaluit Islanders at a Youth Rally and concert. Showing an incredible love and dedication to the Marshall Islands, Gillian flew back to the RMI in January of 2006 to visit her students and the many friends she missed on Jaluit. Now, she is excited to return once more as the Assistant Field Director for the WorldTeach program. When she returns to the U.S. once more, Gillian will persue a Masters degree in International Education Policy. |
| Tamara grew up in Vancouver, Canada where she attended Simon Fraser University and acquired a degree in Anthropology. Her love for working with Indigenous populations combined with trips to Hawai'i as a child spurred a deep interest and love for the Pacific Island region. In 1998, Tamara lived and traveled in Fiji and returned once again in 2002. In 2004 she excitedly returned to the Pacific as a WorldTeach RMI volunteer teacher. She lived on the island of Mejit where she taught all 86 school aged children. Her time on Mejit offered her numerous memories such as writing letters home by moonlight, swimming in crystal waters with giggling kids and the privilege of working with the community to improve the educational experiences of the island. After her time as a volunteer, like Gillian, Tamara returned to Majuro to work for the Ministry of Education as a language instructor for a summer program. During her year away from the RMI, Tamara studied and earned a Post-Baccalaureate in Education. Returning to the Marshall Islands as Field Director for the WorldTeach program, she is excited to continue her work in education, development and the Pacific region. Eventually, Tamara will complete a Masters degree in International Development working on issues to do with culturally sensitive curriculum development, Indigenous empowerment and education. |
